The Top Five Most Popular Card Games

If you’ve got a deck of cards nearby it’s astounding how many different game variations that you can play and enjoy. While many of these games are best played with other people (poker) others are very enjoyable all on your own. Take a look through this list, and maybe next time you’re bored and looking for something to do you can rely on one of these games.

Poker

Most people have heard of poker and many enjoy playing this wildly popular card game. It’s one of the few games that’s featured on sports television stations and frequently televised around the world. This game focuses on card combinations, such as straight runs, two or three-of-a-kind to beat out other players. There is luck involved, but players must bet, call and raise hands to really determine the final outcome of the game. There are dozens of different poker variations played, but Texas Hold’em is the most popular by far.

Rummy

Rummy is a game of sets. You must try to build up three or four cards of the same value, or in ascending or descending order. This game is always played with multiple people and score is kept carefully as the game progresses. Players strive to build points by laying down sets of cards, and usually play through many hands of cards before finishing the game.

Solitaire

There are dozens of different solitaire variations as well, and this popular solo game since the 1700’s. Klondike is one of the most popular variations of this game, but both Spider and FreeCell Solitaire are also widely played on computers and with physical decks of cards. While there are multiplayer variations of Solitaire, it’s known best for being a solo game, and is loved for that very reason.

Contract Bridge

Contract Bridge is one of the best organized and most widely recognized card games in the United States and in other areas of the world. It’s been around since the early 1900’s, and is played with a standard 52 deck of cards. This team-based game is played with two teams of two typically, and gives the teammates a cooperative goal to strive for, which is taking so many of the cards laid out between all players. The game takes some time to learn, but is very strategic and highly enjoyable.

Blackjack

Blackjack, also known as 21 is a popular casino game around the world. The game is played with at least one player and one dealer. The object of it is for the player to get closer to 21 than the dealer does without going over that value. Two cards are dealt to both player and dealer and the player can ask for additional cards one at a time. Face cards are valued as 10, Aces are valued at either 1 or 11 and 10 and lower are valued their number amount. In Blackjack, players place bets on the outcome of the hand and whether they or the dealer is going to win.

Each of these card games can be highly enjoyable when you understand the rules. Most require other players to enjoy, but it’s easy to play a game of solitaire all on your own when nobody is around for something else.
